Who We Are

The Laboratory of Optical Metrology (LOM) was initially established in 2015 and  acquired its current legal status (OGG 822/B/19) in 2019 when the University of West Attica emerged from the consolidation of TEI of Athens and TEI of Piraeus. Optical metrology is the science and technology concerning measurements using light and in this sense different sub-fields related to optics (e.g. ophthalmic optics, optometry, visual optics, lighting, bio-optics, optical instrumentation) serve this concept.

The group’s collective research areas of interest are:

  • quality control, absorbance, transmitance and refractive index of ophthalmic lenses, materials and coatings
  • evaluation of unifocal and multifocal lenses
  • topography of single-core toric and multifocal contact lenses
  • ocular surface and tear film studies
  • meiography, ocular surface thermography
  • topography, pachymetry and optical coherence tomography of the cornea
  • contrast sensitivity studies
  • development of optical instruments
  • optical sensor calibration
  • applied and field spectroscopy
  • photometry and colorimetry
  • biooptics and marine optics
  • ambient lighting and vision
  • laser applications and technologies in optics and optometry
